Analyst: Video Techniques

Know

This video required knowledge of video editing software, phone video shooting techniques, green screen applications, and copyright issues/Creative Commons. I believe that video productions like this sit at the Redefinition stage, allowing us to use the strengths of visual storytelling in the classroom in a way that is not possible without technology.

Do

This video demonstrates simple filming techniques that students can use when demonstrating their learning. Filmmaking, green screen use, and 2D animation are all techniques that can be used for an attractive summative assessment that accommodates learner needs and facilitates student self-direction. One thing I didn’t mention in the video/post, but bears mention is that we can include a cycle of critique and revision in these projects, to refine both technical/artistic and content merits, turning it into both formative and summative assessment that informs where to focus for key lessons. This aligns with the following ISTE standards:

  • “7a: Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on their learning using technology.” (ISTE, n.d.)
  • “7b: Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative and summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely feedback to students and inform instruction.” (ISTE, n.d.)
  • “7c: Use assessment data to guide progress and communicate with students, parents and education stakeholders to build student self-direction.” (ISTE, n.d.)
Understand

I can use any of filmmaking, greenscreen, and 2D animation as options for students to demonstrate competency in the classroom (indeed, as stated in the video, my team already does). I believe that video production allows for a really meaningful, authentic summative assessment and lends itself well to formative assessment through critique and revision cycles.
