Bitsy Resources (WIP)

I adore Adam Ledoux’s Bitsy Editor. It’s a simple and constrained tool for “making little worlds”, and despite its limitations, you can make some really amazing works. This post collects resources on Bitsy for my personal use, as well as for my classes. This post is a work-in-progress.

General Tutorials

  • by @haraiva: Contains a clear and comprehensive overview of the features of Bitsy
  • A Bitsy Tutorial by Claire Morley: The classic, really gets into the core appeal of working in Bitsy.
  • http://liverpoolcodeclub.org/projects/bitsy/ by Liverpool Code Club: A very prescriptive tutorial that goes through the basic features with images. Probably a good fit for elementary/middle school.

Specific Tutorials

  • Time for some Rambling about Dialogue by cephalopoduck: N.B., the game this tutorial is attached to has a swear word in the title, although the game and tutorial itself are otherwise innocuous. Maybe don’t use with elementary. Excellent overview of Bitsy’s dialogue system and how to combine different features.
  • Bitsy Variables: A Tutorial by ayolland: An overview of variables in Bitsy and how to manipulate/use them creatively within dialogue.

Examples

  • Realm of the Dread Sorceress by Cephalopodunk: A complex adventure/puzzle game with great pixel artwork.
  • Bric-a-Brac Shop by William John Holly: An unusual use of the medium showing how you can achieve certain effects with sprites and exits with a little creativity.
  • More to come when I have a few spare minutes to track down links
